Behind the Bowl

Rachael Ray® Nutrish™ dry and wet dog food recipes both provide complete and balanced nutrition for adult dogs. Each Nutrish formula is a complete & balanced meal on its own. Bowl building is simply a fun way to add variety and a personal touch at mealtime. Portions shown in these recipes have been adjusted to account for calories from added toppers.

Always begin with a base of Rachael Ray® Nutrish™ Dry Dog Food. If you choose to add Nutrish wet food, treats, or additional ingredients from the approved Bowl Building list, reduce the amount of dry food by about 10% to help avoid overfeeding. Please review the on-pack feeding instructions to determine the total amount of Nutrish food recommended for them each day and use that as a starting point.

Portion sizes shown are general guidelines based on feeding two meals per day and are not medical recommendations. Your dog’s individual needs may vary based on age, metabolism, activity level, and overall condition. All measurements use a standard 8oz measuring cup, and humanfood ingredients are intentionally portioned in small, dogappropriate amounts.

Your veterinarian is the best resource for guidance specific to your dog, including:

  • Ideal weight and body condition
  • Health considerations (such as digestive sensitivities, food allergies, or conditions)
  • Any dietary restrictions or needs for therapeutic nutrition
  • Appropriate daily calorie intake based on age, size, and activity level

These recipes assume feeding two meals per day. Daily calorie needs are divided in half to determine a singlemeal target, which is then balanced as follows:

65% dry food + 25% wet food + 10% topper(s) = 100% of recommended calories for one meal.

This approach helps support bowl building at both daily meals without exceeding typical daily calorie needs.

Bowl building ingredients should be used as a garnish. Limit additions to no more than two approved ingredients per bowl. If using two toppers, each should generally account for about 5% of the meal’s total calories.

Proteins and carbohydrates from the approved Bowl Building list should be boiled, baked, steamed, or slow cooked without seasoning, salt, butter, or oil. Allow food to cool completely, remove any bones, and cut into bitesized pieces.

Fruits and vegetables from the approved Bowl Building list should be washed thoroughly, chopped into bitesized pieces, and served raw unless otherwise noted. Fruits higher in natural sugars should be used sparingly and should not exceed 2–3% of your dog’s total daily calories.

When adding new ingredients, introduce them slowly over 3–5 days and monitor your dog for any signs of digestive upset, itching, or sensitivity.

Food needs may change during pregnancy and nursing. Feed the amount needed to help maintain the pregnant female’s ideal body condition. Food intake may increase significantly during lactation.

  • After opening Rachael Ray®Nutrish™ Wet Dog Food, refrigerate and use within 3 days.
  • Rachael Ray®Nutrish™ Dry Dog food should be stored in a secure, cool, dry place. Keep dry food in its original bag or packaging and seal it tightly—using a binder clip if needed—to help maintain freshness.
  • Always provide plenty of fresh, clean water.
